The best way to protect against Chlamydia is always to use a condom - even if you use other forms of contraception. And no - you cannot catch it off a toilet seat! Q. How many people are thought to be infected with Chlamydia? A. We know that if you are sexually active and between 15-24 years old, that 1 in 7 people have Chlamydia. Over 50% do not have any symptoms but damage can still be done to the reproductive system, so it is important to get tested if you are sexually active! 70% women and 50% men do not have symptoms Q. How often should I get a test? A. Every year between 15-24 if you are with the same sexual partner. If you change partner remember to re-screen each time! Q. Where can I get a test? A. There are over 80 locations listed on this website where you can access a test. You can even have a kit sent out to you in plain packaging - you simply follow the instructions in the kit and post the sample in any letterbox - we even pay the postage for you! Q. Is the test easy? A. It's a wee sample. You simply don't wee for 2 hours then go along to do your test. There are no intimate or physical examinations, so don't worry! Q. I have a regular partner - what happens if I'm positive? A. If you are found to have chlamydia, the CHLASP team will support you as well as making sure your partner gets a test and gets treated. Q. How do I tell any previous partners I have Chlamydia? Do they need to know? A. The Health Advisors at CHLASP can help you do this. Anyone you have had sexual contact within the previous six months would need to be screened and treated. They could have infected you or you could have infected them. Remember, untreated Chlamydia can have health consequences. It's a responsible thing to do to let your partner/ex partners know. Chlamydia can be passed on through sexual contact whether it is between men and women, men and men or women and women. Remember, the world is a big place and there is room for everyone, whatever your sexuality! Q. What is the treatment for Chlamydia and how effective is it? A. Unless you are (or suspect you are) pregnant, the treatment is for antibiotics, all taken together. It's really effective, but takes a week to work, so we advise you not to have unprotected sex for one week following treatment (don't worry, we will give you some condoms!) Q.
